Do Something

Yesterday my brothers and I, along with my son Josh had the opportunity to serve our community. We partnered with Samaritan’s Purse, one of the leading “disaster relief” organizations in the country, to help some of the flood victims here in Nashville. 3 weeks ago, our community was severely devastated by unprecedented floods and rain of mass destruction. Some lost lives, and thousand’s lost their homes, businesses and literally everything they owned. It’s been heart wrenching to watch neighbors and friends go through the pain of uncertainty and grief in all of this.

What can I do? How can I help? Where do I even start? These are questions that most of us ask during a time like this. Sometimes the overwhelming sense of feeling so small in a situation so big can paralyze us. I don’t have the money to do what I’d like to. I don’t have the skill to make a difference. I really don’t have the time to give. I wish I could, but I have my own problems too you know. Have you ever said or thought any of this? I know I have.

Isaiah 1:17- “Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”

Matthew 25:35- “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

Our team of volunteers had very little experience in construction. We were a bunch of musicians, a middle-school student, a lady in her 70’s that paid her own way from Washington State, a retired professor, a fireman, an administrator, a media consultant and an illustrator, all volunteering to help a family we never even met. By the time we left that uninhabitable house yesterday, the cleanup and rebuilding process was well on its way.

There are people all around you who have been hit by the storms of life. They are down and out or maybe up and out! They are flooded with doubt and fear. They’ve been ravaged by death, divorce, rejection and despair. They may appear to have a lot, yet they’ve lost their way. What will you do? How will you respond? Don’t be overwhelmed by your lack of ability or resources. Use your gifts, your talents, and your time to assist those in need. God will take your little and make it big! He wants to use you to help someone else! Whatever you do, please don’t sit there. Don’t turn a blind eye to a world in desperate need! DO SOMETHING!

True words. I have found that I am never disappointed when I obey God. This is beautiful encouragement. I’ll definitely share this on my Facebook page as well today. I think we sometimes forget how even the smallest action can bless the lives of the people around us :)

How true is your devotion. Sometimes if we just lend an ear it will help someone. At times, I have to admit it to myself, that I am not strong as I protray and just need to let those around me lift me up, as God has sent them to do. We are all human and we all have trials . …

Thanks for sharing brother Joe. When reading this the song by Michael Jackson “Man In The Mirror” came to mind. It starts with us. Thanks for the encouragement! God bless you and the fam!

“Heal the world. Make it a better place. For you and for me and the entire human race.” I would give the rest of that chorus from a MJ song, but I forgot it. I don’t why, but that’s what popped into my head while I was reading your devotional.Great reminder that we need to help other people anyway we can, and not let our doubts stop us.

I really enjoyed this…..I’m so blessed to see you Ministers of the Lord take the time to show the love of Christ to your hurting community!!! I pray for Nashville too!!!
Yesterday in my community. I met a young woman that just moved here from Asia. She had shared with me that she is newly married to a military man and doesn’t know anyone living here in the States. I told her since I was her neighbor that if she ever needed anything that she could call me and that we can do something together. I found out she is also a Christian and that she was also going through something very painful and she was in despair. I was able to relate to her and comfort her because I had gone through the same thing that she was going through and I was able to share with her what the Lord had spoken to me about my experience through it all. She then couldn’t control her emotions and started to cry and I hugged her. I just met her and I knew that the Lord had begun her healing through the words that he wanted me to share with her. It was such a blessing!!! I was thinking afterward , if I hadn’t slowed down my pace that day I would of missed this opportunity to share the love of Jesus!!! God comforts us in our time of need. I’m sure your community is comforted knowing that they aren’t alone!!! I’m sure it was heartbreaking to see your community go through such devastation like Nehemiah. It is through prayer that we will know daily what His leading & will for our lives daily. Yes, we all do need to be concerned about others and especially for our neighbors. It’s only when we give of ourselves, time & talent, treasures is when were truly fulfilled & blessed!

God is looking at our faithfulness to the little things He brings to our lives daily!!!

    God Bless,

    Sis Rena

    Hi Joe,
When I read the line “God will take your little and make it big!” I started to cry when I read it. We always look to find someone that belive in us. This was a good reminder that we don’t have to look for someone, and he is ready to use us and help us. We just need to ask him and he will show you…………He BELIVES in you and us!!!

    Thansk for shareing!

It’s so amazing to be a child in “God’s Kingdom.” My church always teaches on how to serve others first before anyone else. I really love that because I do a lot of community work through my church and it is such a blessing to see these peoples faces because they are so happy/blessed by the help!

God is so amazing and his love is so strong for all of us..I believe if we keep walking in the faith He has for us then He will bless us with the passion and skills that we are meant to do for Him.

Thank you Joe for the reminder because I am reminded of the thing I am dealing with right now in my faith. God is pointing me in a whole new direction in my life right now and it’s so amazing to take the walk of faith and not be afraid to use my faith. I am really holding onto my faith right now because I know everything will be ok with the faith and love that I have from God!

    God Bless,

    Elizabeth

I so needed to hear this today. Sometimes we get lost in our own trials and tests of life that we stop doing what Jesus called us to do, that is the whole word of God. When it’s not us affected we can just push things aside but that’s not Christ like. We need to seek ye first the kingdom of God (God’s way of doing things through us). Jesus said “the kingdom of God is not what you look to see; it’s not here or there but it’s within us”. It’s operating by His standards, His Lordship, rulership, & obedience to everyday living in us. God’s system if you will. I bless the Katinas for leaving such a powerful message to remind us that we represent Christ and should be about our Father’s business.
