Remembering Israel “Izz” Godkin

Israel was like a younger brother to us. He was married to his “girl”, Pele who is like a sister and one of our kid’s favorite Aunties. This past Saturday, he went home to be with the Savior. We’ve experienced death on several occasions. It’s never easy and it always feels too soon, especially in this situation.

Izz was only 24 years old. He and Pele were going to celebrate their 1st anniversary next month. They are expecting their 1st child, (a baby girl) this coming November. It still seems so unbelievable. It’s hard to accept that someone so strong, so young, so loved and so full of life is no longer here. We know he’s with Jesus now, but our selfish human nature wishes so badly that he was still here.

He was a beautiful soul. His soft -spoken personality was a bit of a contrast to his muscular build and long, black hair. Sometimes he wore it in braids and other times he just put it in a ponytail. He was usually sportin’ jeans, sweats, shorts, a jersey, or a t-shirt along with the latest Nikes he could find on ebay. When he walked into a room he was definitely the point of attraction. He could be intimidating if he wanted to, but his heart was way too loving and humble to come across that way. He played the bass and sang along with his brothers, Ishmael and Isaac forming the band known as the “Godkins”. He was a natural athlete. He was passionate about sports and enjoyed competing. Even on a fun “couple’s game night”, he always brought it! He was a joy go hang out with. Most of his childhood was spent in Washington State and San Diego, California. 2 years ago, the Godkins moved to Tennessee to pursue music full time. However, God had a much greater plan for Izz. It wasn’t long after he moved that he met Pele. She’s a beautiful person who would give you her last dime. (No, really!) I remember sitting in a green room backstage and Izz was going through the pictures on his cell phone. Someone walked by and asked him, “Who is that”! He replied so affectionately and with the biggest smile I’d ever seen from him, “This is my girl”. I knew at that moment that he had found the love of his life. I could go on and on about Izz but if he were still here, he would rather us tell you about his love for Jesus, his wife, his parents and his brothers.

He will be missed by all of us who were blessed to know him. The world lost a really good man. If heaven is as “sweet” as they say, it just got even sweeter! We will see you again someday little brother. With God’s help, we will take care of Pele and your beautiful daughter. Your Parents, Ish and Ice will be okay too. Our hearts our broken but that’s just the world we live in. We’ll get through, somehow, someway. It just won’t be the same without you.

We love you Izz!

Beautifully written as usual! Thanks for letting us into your world just a little bit more. I am honored.
Israel was obviously a wonderful man.
We @ Calvary Chapel of Philly lost a few musicians ourselves, there was Kirk, Roby Duke and Celeste. All taken too soon. And now Israel G. sigh.
Now there are 4 more in heaven singing sweet praises & jammin’ with/to our Dad…they are looking at Him face to face! Wow!!!! I’m sad for all of us but I’m happy for them.
I will be praying for your families during this rough time, Israel’s wife and family as well. May our Lord & Savior comfort each of you more than you can imagine during this rough time.

“If one member suffers, all suffer together with it”

That piece of scripture came to mind when I saw on the Godkins’ website that Izzy had passed away.I got to know start listening to this group from seeing them on the promos for your cruise last year. They looked interesting to me so I checked out their website.I loved listening to their worship music because it had a urban feel to it that a lot of other CCM artist lacked. To see a guy,who always seem to have a smile on his face, pass away shocked me.It reminded me that we really need to cherish these moments with our loved ones and enjoy life because we REALLY don’t know which day will be our last.

His wife , child, and fam are in my prayers.I wasn’t able to donate a lot to Pele, but what little I could I did. We’ll see you in Heaven Izzy…someday!God Bless!

Thanks for sharing of Izzy’s touch in thislife. Ipray his wife & child will recieve “every good thing from above” as being a single Mom is not easy but God does make a way. He is faithful and helped me raise my daughter solo and now she is 21 living inSan Diego and will complete hers studies at UCSD. She still is a child of God and loves and trusts Him, so encourage Izzy’s wife that God will remian faithful to the fatherless.
But I will not be surprized that one day God will bring her another covering.
May God heal the wounds of this passing as he comforts those closest to Izzy.

I am so sorry. This is obviously about a very good friend. I know that Pele & Izzy’s daughter will have at least SIX FATHERS!!! BUT YES, IN OUR SELFISH NATURE, we want our loved ones always around us. If there is physical distance , pick up the phone (DON’T TEXT) and tell them that you love them. Some people say that this is being MUSHY……so call it what you like MUSHY….I love a lot and I am not afraid to tell them. Love is used so frequently that it almost looses its meaning. Your words are sincere. I feel them in my heart and I must say it makes feel like as id I knew him (didn’t) :(
i will be donating when we meet up at the Jersey Shore! God Bless and I kinda sorta wish I was already HOME with Dad!!! *sigh* :-/ My sincerest condolences!

I do know all of the Godkins looked up to you and loved you as well!!! I will always remember something you said Joe, after the Samoa devastation…..”We will celebrate that God is there!”

Thank you for your strength and trust in the face of crisis!

What a beautiful, heartfelt tribute! Many, many, here in San Diego are missing him too!

The moment I found out I stopped by at your website and Godkinz on myspace to say my brief n sincere condolences. At least instead of his cool braids n casual style with mellow yet strong voice – he’ll be sporting an imperishable persona at the right hand of God. Niiice! God bless you and love n prayers for Israel’s wife n kids. amen.

    I really love Katinas because of your songs that you created….it always lifted up my soul,and gives me hope….;
most especially now that I’m in pain, because of the most painful moment happened in my life….just recently…..
I give sympathy to the family, friends, and love ones of Israel Godkin…
like you, I also lost my dearest dad and mom recently, just only this year..both of them…
the pain was still here, but knowing that they are GOD’s property, they are now in JESUS loving arms to give them rest and to wipe away their tears….and someday we will have a great reunion in heaven with them, and like them,we will see our LORD JESUS CHRIST face to face..and that’s the best moment our CHRISTian life…to live forever with our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST that we believe in…
I’ll be your partner in prayers, that may our dear Lord JESUS CHRIST embrace you with a great comfort through this pain……..JESUS throughly Cares!!!
    Love You and GOD Bless!!!
    More Power…!!!
    (with hugs and kisses)

I just met the brothers listening to their music. We went to San Diego this weekend and went into the Rock’s bookstore and their cd, the Godkinz, was playing. I don’t remember what song was playing by the time we were ready to leave, I just knew that I could not leave without that cd. They captured my heart.

Now to hear of their loss it has been difficult, but with God He does all things well. Much peace to the family, friends and to those who loved him.
